We know this is a worrying time for you but we will do everything we can to help you and to care for your baby. We will try to give you as much information as possible about your baby’s progress with regular updates, but please feel free to ask questions.
Your baby is here because he or she needs extra medical, surgical and nursing care. Babies requiring admission to a neonatal unit may require special care, high dependency care or intensive care. Intensive care is needed only by the most premature or sick babies. Our service is provided from both the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Special Care Baby Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.
The Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU) in Brighton is a specialist unit for the care of premature and sick newborn babies. It provides special care, high dependency care and intensive care. It also provides a service for babies requiring surgery.
The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in Haywards Heath is a unit for the care of premature and sick newborn babies requiring short term high dependency care or special care. Both units have all the necessary facilities and staffing to deliver high quality and up-to-date care to newborn babies and supportive care to babies and parents during the stages of recovery.
We are continually involved in local and national research projects. As a result of many parents consenting to their babies’ taking part in such research we have been able to constantly improve our care.
Trevor Mann was a children’s doctor whose skill saved the lives of many babies in Brighton.
He founded our special care baby unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton in 1970. He did so after reading an article in the medical journal The Lancet about new artificial breathing techniques being used to treat young babies with a low birth weight.
Trevor Mann also founded our charity ‘Rockinghorse’ in 1967, with the initial aim of providing incubators to neonatal patients outside London.
The Trevor Mann Baby Unit has become one of the foremost centres for treating premature and sick newborn babies and has dramatically improved survival rates.
